Assistance for people devastated by floods – October 2011
The foundation responded to a request from FUNDACCO to provide assistance to people who were devastated by floods as a result of two weeks of rain in the Achuapa region of Nicaragua.
The rain was a product of a tropical wave from hurricane Rina, a slow moving storm that ravaged Central America with wet weather for weeks.
A plea to our donor base at the time resulted in donations exceeding $8000 (USD).
With the funding, FUNDACCO prepared hampers that consisted of rice, beans, sugar, oil, powdered milk, coffee, pasta, soap and water as well as other essential items.
Initial contact was made with the benefiting community to identify those families who were most affected by the floods.
Items were purchase in bulk from suppliers in Managua and hampers were assembled by FUNDACCO staff. Time was of an essence because the needs in the north were urgent. FUNDACCO used their own vehicles to transport the goods north, a two to three hour drive from Managua.
The community was made aware of the arrival of the aid and beneficiaries were assembled to receive their hampers.
The project was a resounding success and much appreciated by those who received the aid.
